The Alternatives is a visual exploration in to the housing crisis in the UK.
It’s implied that house ownership is a rite of passage much like starting a family or having a career. With the average wage in Cambridge around £28k, and the average house price is in the region of £420k, home ownership isn’t going to be a reality for anyone who isn’t already on the ladder. Based on these figures, a mortgage for three times your salary will probably not secure you a flat or house in Cambridge in 2016.
Exploring how people live when they step away from society’s obsession with bricks and mortar, to investigate the alternatives to house ownership and see the lives people build in the unique places they live, within commuting distance of Cambridge.
Photographed on black and white film, the original exhibition at Cambridge Art Salon comprises fibre-based prints created in a traditional wet-tray darkroom.
